Fio. Clorofilla by Fioranese, curated by Davide Tonelli — a botanical 20x20 built on the biophilic idea of bringing planting indoors. The patterns are drawn by hand rather than photographed, so the leaves read as illustration: graphic, flat and deliberately unbotanical in their colouring.

The collection is designed as a pair of decorated patterns plus four plain grounds, which is what makes it workable. Used alone the pattern would overwhelm a room; used as Fioranese intend — a panel or band of pattern held by fields of plain colour — it behaves.

Patterns and grounds

Primavera and Autunno are the decorated tiles, each carrying twelve different botanical subjects supplied assorted in the box. Primavera is the fresh green spring palette; Autunno the warm russet one. Fioranese do not guarantee a minimum number of each subject per box, so dry-lay before fixing.

Rugiada, Terra, Selva and Nembo are the plain grounds — a pale dew grey, a warm earth, a deep forest green and a soft cloud white. They are the same 20x20 and the same price, and they exist to give the patterned tiles somewhere to breathe.

How to use it

The mistake with a patterned 20x20 is running it everywhere. Set out from the centre of the room so any cut border is even, and think in terms of proportion: a patterned panel behind a bath, a band at dado height, or a patterned floor inset framed by plain. Because pattern and ground share one format the joints run straight through the transition. A mid-tone grout usually works better than white or black, which both compete with the drawing.

See it before you buy

Twelve assorted subjects is impossible to judge from a single image — you are seeing one twelfth of what will arrive. Scale is the other trap: a drawn leaf that looks delicate in a thumbnail is assertive across a wall. Samples of both patterns and all four grounds are available to order, and the range is on display at our luxury interiors showroom in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, where you can lay several out together.
