When you need one

Any basin with nothing underneath it needs a trap you are content to look at. Wall-hung bowls, washstands, console basins and anything on a slender frame all fall into that category. If the basin sits on a vanity unit with a door, a standard plastic trap will never be seen and this is an unnecessary expense — we would rather tell you that than sell you one.

Where it is visible, the eye travels straight down the pipework from the tap. A chrome trap under a brushed brass tap is the detail that undoes an otherwise careful bathroom, and it is noticed far more often than people expect when specifying.
