An Oxidised Iron Kitchen in Trentham

A bespoke handleless kitchen built around one forged-looking surface — a hand-oxidised Liquid Metal Iron worktop — set on a floor with no joints at all.

The Brief

Mr and Mrs Griffiths wanted a kitchen with real character, something that felt crafted rather than catalogued. The answer was a bespoke handleless layout built around one bold idea: a worktop that looks forged, not fabricated. Everything else in the room is there to frame it.

The Worktop

The worktop is Liquid Metal Iron, a real metal coating deliberately oxidised by hand to bring out deep rust-brown tones, then sealed so the patina is locked in and ready for everyday cooking. No two areas are the same; the surface moves from dark umber to warm copper depending on the light.

It runs the full length of the sink wall, rises into a matching upstand beneath the windows, and turns to form the peninsula, where it folds down to the floor as a waterfall end panel. That continuous run is what makes it read as one solid piece of material rather than a top sitting on cabinets.

The Cabinetry

To let the metal lead, the cabinetry is kept quiet. Soft greige handleless base units sit on a slim black plinth, and a bank of tall stone-grey units houses twin built-in ovens, an open wine rack and a lit glass-fronted display cabinet.

Concealed LED lighting washes the ceiling above the tall run. A black undermount sink and a brushed brass tap add the finishing jewellery, and a sculptural black suspended hood floats over the induction hob, keeping sightlines open across the room.

The Floor

Underfoot, the whole space is finished in Microstone Poured Floor in Chalk White. It is a self-levelling coloured mineral floor that levels and finishes in a single pour, so there are no tiles, grout lines or joins anywhere in the room.

It flows uninterrupted from the kitchen into the dining area, giving the room a calm, gallery-like base. Against that pale, even surface, the oxidised worktop glows even richer. It is a kitchen that will only get better with age.
