Introducing Design Works Bespoke Worktops: Any Length, No Joints

Design Works Bespoke worktops in Prestige, Castle Grey Etched Vein and Microstone Trani Beige

For years, the length of a kitchen worktop has been dictated by the size of the slab it is cut from. Natural stone and quartz worktops are typically limited to around 3,600mm, so anything longer, whether a generous kitchen island, a long galley run or an open-plan layout with a breakfast bar, has to be made in two pieces with a joint where they meet. However carefully that joint is filled and colour-matched, it is still there, breaking the surface and interrupting the veining. At Home of Clay we think the worktop should fit the kitchen, not the other way round. That is why we are introducing Design Works Bespoke worktops: made to any length, as one continuous piece, with no joints.

The Problem with the 3,600mm Limit

Quarried stone and engineered quartz are both produced as slabs, and the slab size sets the ceiling on how long a single worktop can be. For most kitchens that is not an issue, but the kitchens people most want to create today are exactly the ones where it becomes one. Large islands, waterfall ends that drop to the floor and long, uninterrupted runs of worktop all push past the limit, which means a joint has to go somewhere. On a plain surface it is noticeable. On a veined, marble-look surface it is hard to hide, because the pattern simply does not continue across the break.

Any Length. No Joints.

Design Works Bespoke worktops are not cut from a fixed-size slab. Each one is fabricated by Microstone Ltd and made to order to the exact dimensions of your kitchen, so the length of the worktop is set by your design rather than by the material. The result is one continuous surface from end to end: no joint lines, no mismatched veining and nothing to interrupt the look of the kitchen. It is a solution designed for the statement island, the long run and the open-plan space where a joint would be most obvious.

Three Finishes, Three Processes

The collection launches in three finishes. Each is made using its own distinct process, which gives every worktop a different character.

Prestige

Prestige is a bright, crisp surface with bold, dark veining, and it is marbled entirely by hand. Because the veining is created by hand rather than printed or cut from a single slab, every Prestige worktop is unique. Prestige is also the finish in the collection that can be book-matched, which we cover in more detail below.

Castle Grey Etched Vein

Castle Grey Etched Vein is a warm, soft grey with fine, pale veining that is carved into the surface. The carved veining gives it a subtle, natural texture and a sense of depth that sits beautifully alongside both light and dark cabinetry.

Microstone Trani Beige

Microstone Trani Beige is made from Microstone material that is trowelled, sanded and sealed. The trowelled application creates soft movement and tonal variation across the surface, giving it a warm, natural beige finish with an organic, hand-crafted feel.

What is Book-Matching?

Book-matching is a technique long used with the finest marbles, in which two surfaces are mirrored so that the veining flows symmetrically across the centre line, like the pages of an open book. The effect is striking and deliberate, turning the worktop into a focal point in its own right. Prestige is available book-matched, allowing its hand-marbled veining to be mirrored across an island or a waterfall end for a truly statement finish.

Where Bespoke Worktops Work Best

Because they can be made to any length, Design Works Bespoke worktops come into their own in the layouts where traditional worktops struggle most.

  • Kitchen islands of any size, finished as a single, seamless surface.
  • Waterfall ends that continue the worktop down to the floor for a clean, architectural look.
  • Long runs in open-plan and galley kitchens, where a joint would otherwise be unavoidable.
  • Breakfast bars and extended surfaces that carry the same finish across the whole kitchen.

Pricing and Installation

Design Works Bespoke worktops are priced per linear metre and installation is included in the price. Every worktop is installed on site by our team, so there is nothing extra to arrange.
